Grid system

The Scania grid system is the framework for all the visual elements. It’s fundamental to everything we design and builds consistency and structure across all applications.

Logotype

In the Scania grid system, the Scania wordmark and the Scania symbol are separated, but work in conjunction. The height of the symbol is always 1.5 x the height of the letter “I” in the Scania wordmark.

There are two main options for the logotype placement:

  • Vertical right: symbol in upper right corner and wordmark in lower right corner (1)
  • Horizontal: symbol in upper right corner and wordmark in upper left corner (2)

In a few cases with odd formats or special occasions, the symbol and wordmark may be put on the front and back (3) or centred (4).

Both the symbol and wordmark must always be presented when first establishing Scania as the source of communication, e.g. on the first page or cover of a PowerPoint presentation, brochure or magazine, or in the header of an external web application. Once Scania has been established as the source, only the symbol can be used, e.g. for the content slides and inlay of a PowerPoint presentation, brochure or magazine*, or when logged in or scrolling down in a web application.

*) Exemption: In brochures and magazines with several pages, the Scania symbol and wordmark must be presented only on the front page, but can be left out completely from the inlay (the following pages).

Text

Left alignment is standard for text in most layouts. Exemptions include odd formats (extremely narrow or stretched formats with a small amount of text) and some digital contexts, where the text may be centred.

In expressive communication, such as marketing communication, the main headline is kept short and set in Scania Sans Headline Bold in a large point size. In more formal or internal communication, or to achieve a softer tonality, Scania Sans Headline Regular or Scania Sans Bold may be used as main headline.

The standard text colour for light backgrounds is Scania Blue. For dark backgrounds and most images, use text in Scania White.

Grid systems

Different touchpoints require different grids, described below. When working with a specific print or digital application, keep in mind these different types of grids and choose the one that best serves your need. As a help there are also several templates available.

A4 grids

The landscape and portrait grids are the most common grids for documents and print. The symbol is always placed in the upper right corner, and the wordmark can either be placed in the lower right corner or the upper left corner. The height of the symbol is always 1.5 x the height of the letter “I” in the Scania wordmark. In the landscape grid, the wordmark is 1/6 of the width of the format.

In the portrait grid, the wordmark is 1/4 of the width of the format.

For top left corner placement, the wordmark is centre aligned with the symbol.

The grid consists of 12 columns, with 3.75 mm gutter in A4 format (5 mm gutter in A3 landscape format). The top and right margins are adjusted to align with the centre and bottom of the griffin’s crown.

The background could be any of Scania’s primary or supporting colours or an image. Use Scania Blue for text and wordmark on light backgrounds, and Scania White for text and wordmark on dark backgrounds. The text is always left-aligned, but the placement is flexible on the vertical axis for best contrast over any image.

Below are some examples of A4 grids.

Full-page ad - left and right pages

Due to the centre fold of magazines, the grid for full-page ads with bleed are adjusted to counteract the fold.

  1. For a left page ad with full bleed: the symbol and wordmark are inset to the second right margin
  2. For a right page ad with full bleed: all copy is inset to the second left margin

Brochure grid

For brochure covers, a three-row system could be applied. Then the image spans 2/3 of the cover height and the top 1/3 is left as a placeholder for text. In this grid the wordmark is always placed in the upper left corner (and symbol in upper right corner) and the text is left-aligned.

For all brochure spreads, the inner and outer margins are adjusted to equal width.

Grid scaling

The Scania grid is available as portrait and landscape templates in A4 format as standard.

For formats between A4 and A5, use the same dimensions and sizes for the wordmark, symbol and margins as the A4 grid. Use 12 or 6 columns with 3.75 mm gutter.

For A6 and formats alike, the wordmark is 1/5 of the width of a spread.

For formats larger than A4, use the scaling principle described here. Use 12 or 6 columns with 3.75 mm gutter.

For formats larger than A4, the grid is scaled up proportionally, to fit the width of the larger format. The height is then adjusted to fit the new format.

Roll-ups

For roll-ups a specific layout is applied. The symbol is placed in the upper right corner and the wordmark in the lower right corner. The size of the wordmark is 2/5 of the width of the format. The margin is 1.5 x the height of the letter “I” in the Scania wordmark (i.e. same as the height of the Scania symbol). the text is left aligned.

When no copy/text is applied to the roll-up the vertical lock-up logotype is used (for branding purposes).

Posters

For all posters in A-format, use the Scania grid for portrait/landscape orientation.

When no copy/text is applied to the poster (but only an image, for decoration), the vertical lock-up logotype is used. Place the logotype in the lower right corner (same place and size as the wordmark according to the grid system).

Internal and formal communication

For information and documents intended for internal or more formal communication there are templates with more focus on function and information than expressive branding (as marketing communication).

These templates include a section at the top of the page where information about the document and date should be stated. This section can for instance be used for the information “For internal use only” for internal documents that are not to be spread outside Scania.

The standard background colour is white and headlines are set in Scania Sans Bold in upper and lower case.

These templates can be used for internal folders and newsletters, but also external documents of a more formal and/or informative character, such as policies or documents intended for suppliers.

PowerPoint

For PowerPoint presentations a specific layout is applied.

The title slide includes both the symbol (in the upper right corner) and the wordmark (in the lower right corner) and the Scania Office Headline Bold font for the presentation title. Name or sub-headlines are set in Scania Office Headline Regular.

On the following slides only the symbol is used in the upper right corner and Scania Office Bold is used for page titles. Use the Scania PowerPoint template to achieve the correct layout.

Digital banners and odd formats

For odd formats, e.g. digital banners, specific layouts are applied. The wordmark and symbol must still be used in conjunction, with correct proportions and with text/copy applied between. The symbol may never be placed under the Scania wordmark.

  1. Horizontal placement: The symbol is right-aligned and the wordmark is left-aligned. The text/copy is left-aligned. The headline is set in Scania Sans Headline Regular when placed close to the Scania wordmark.
  2. Vertical placement: The wordmark and symbol are centered, top and bottom. The text/copy is also centered.
  3. Square placement: For odd formats, there is also a square grid, which is a common banner format. The wordmark and symbol are centered, top and bottom. The text/copy is centered. Odd formats may require customised grids and sizing. The clear space of the wordmark should be maintained.

Below are some examples illustrating some special treatments because of the odd formats, for example:

  • When placed close to the Scania wordmark: Scania Sans Headline Regular is used
  • For extremely small formats where no copy/message can be added: the lock-up logotype is used
  • In online square banner with short message: symbol, wordmark and text may be centred
  • When the format is extremely narrow: a short headline may run over more than three rows

Digital applications

At Scania, we use two systems to manage our layout and grid in digital design: the unit and the grid system. These two systems are the fundament for all web and mobile applications that we design and develop.

Read more on Tegel Design System, our digital design system, which should be used for all digital applications at Scania.

Good practice

Use the grid system to organise and present content in a precise and reliable way. Below are some examples of how to also include some white space and create more space for each of the blocks to present them as vital and important information, but also to help users navigate through the content.

Don'ts

Place the symbol in any other corner than the top right.
Enlarge the wordmark or symbol beyond the correct proportions.
Increase or decrease the margins beyond the correct proportions.
Replace the wordmark with any other text or logotype, nor connect the symbol and wordmark with any lines, frames or similar.
Use blue text and wordmark on dark images.

Download

All Scania templates that are available for download are based on the grid systems as described above. On the templates page you find templates for marketing communication, internal communication, PowerPoint presentations, Word documents and more.

For digital design we refer to Tegel Design System, which should be used for all Scania's digital applications.
