Typography

With our custom-made and unique font family Scania Sans we achieve a strong and unified brand expression. It includes fonts for a strong impact and brand recognition, but also fonts for more refined and functional needs and expressions. Remember that consistency is key, which is why correct font settings always must be used.

Scania Sans Headline

Scania Sans Headline is closely linked and associated with the Scania wordmark and has been designed primarily for main headlines in expressive communication, e.g. marketing communication. It is developed in upper case only and is used for short and expressive headlines. The leading should be set to a maximum 95%, but could also be smaller, preferably around 80% to achieve a solid impression.

Scania Sans Headline Bold

The bold weight is the most expressive and impactful font used for main headlines. The headline is set in a large size, always bigger than the wordmark, and kept short - not to surpass three rows.

Scania Sans Headline Regular

The regular weight could be used for headlines to achieve a softer tonality. It could also be used as a sub-headline, complementing the main headline in bold. The size of the sub-headline should then be maximum 1/3 of the size of the main headline in bold.

Examples of how Scania Sans Headline may be used:

Scania Sans

Scania Sans is primarily used for body copy, intro texts, quotations and graphs. The bold weight may be used for sub and secondary headlines and is used for main headlines in less expressive communication, e.g. more formal or internal communication. Text in Scania Sans is always written in upper and lower case. The leading is always 125%.

Scania Sans Bold

The bold weight is used for sub and secondary headlines or as main headline in less expressive communication, e.g. more formal or internal communication, PowerPoint presentations and letters. It may also be used for text when better legibility is needed on various backgrounds, e.g. for quotations and intro texts.

Scania Sans Regular

The regular weight is used for body copy, intro texts, quotations and graphs. Minimum recommended size: 6 pt. Recommended number of characters in one line: approximate 50-70.

Scania Sans Italic

The italic weight can be used to highlight specific words in the body copy when necessary.

Examples of how Scania Sans may be used:

Scania Sans Semi Condensed

Scania Sans Semi Condensed is used when the space is limited and a more efficient font is needed, e.g. in annotations, graphs and digital applications. The font is only to be used in smaller sizes, approximately 4.5-20 pt and for text in upper and lower case. The leading is always 125%.

Scania Sans Semi Condensed Bold

The bold weight is for headlines and sub-headlines, but can also be used to improve legibility on certain backgrounds.

For specific applications, such as e-mails, or when technical restrictions or special glyphs for languages limits the use of the Scania Sans typeface, the following replacement fonts are recommended:

  • Latin languages: Helvetica Neue or Arial
  • Other languages: Use a font as similar as possible to Helvetica Neue or Arial

Bullets and lists

For a coherent use and expression, use the following styles when using bullets and numbered lists.

Good practice

Below are some examples of how to use the Scania Sans fonts with good contrast between the headline font and fonts used for body copy, creating clear hierarchy and impact in our communication.

Don'ts

Add any kind of framing of headlines to create a different expression.
Outline text, make headlines italic or add 3D or any other effects.
Let headlines surpass three rows when set in Scania Sans Headline Bold (use a sub headline or choose the regular font instead).
Mix weights or colours for any typography within the same text section (highlight specific words or phrases in body copy by making them italic instead).
Add any kind of effects or gradients to any typographical element.
Use too little or too much leading for any typography.
Mix different sizes of text within the same text section, i.e. in a headline, sub headline or body copy.
Treat the word Scania any differently when writing it in a sentence (use the same formatting as for the rest of the text).
Use sub headlines that are larger than 1/3 of the main headline (to keep the brand expression and type hierarchy consistent).
Justify any copy.
Right align any copy.
Centre any body copy (only headlines and sub headlines may be centred for specific formats).
Use too little or too much tracking and/or word spacing for any typography.
Place the sub heading too close or too far from the main headline.
Use any of the Scania Sans font family for e-mails (use a standard e-mail or fallback font instead).
Use the bold or italic button in Word or PowerPoint (select the bold or italic version of Scania Sans Office font instead).
